The Importance of Preparing Students for Their Future by Sofia - January 2023 Scholarship Essay
Home Economics, or Family and Consumer Sciences as it's called today to remove the stigma that the class is meant exclusively for females, should be a required class for any and all students in schools across the nation.
Math, science, and other subjects can help students acquire jobs and pursue their interests and hobbies, but it doesn't help them understand how to change a tire or do rudimentary cooking. Some students may already have these skills due to them being curious in them or needing them to support themselves or their families, but several students would simply outright skip the proposed elective class in favor of more "stimulating" ones, such as theatre. That means that most students will need to either take Family and Consumer Sciences in college or outright struggle through the adult tasks themselves in the future. This would be challenging for a student's ability to live on campus since they would not have access to their parents to do their cooking and other chores since they would no longer live in the same residence.
Even though Family and Consumer Science might be considered a "waste of time" compared to other electives, the things that it will teach you is something that you can utilize for the remainder of your life, even if it doesn't make much sense at first.
