The Impact of a Hospital by Skyler - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

Over the summer break, I took the amazing opportunity to volunteer at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, Virginia; this volunteer experience is what inspired me to pursue a career as a Physician Assistant. I have always wanted to help people when I grow up but I never knew exactly what I wanted to be until I became a Junior Volunteer at Sentara. The generous staff and amazing patients gave me the experience I needed to reveal my future goals. My favorite memory in the hospital was when the patients I saw became so happy to talk to someone, like myself. Developing these relationships with patients made my heart so full because seeing other people smile is what makes me happy. Giving back to the community is very important to me and pursuing a job in a hospital is one of the most efficient ways to ensure that I will always get to do so. Physician Assistants are also in very high demand and with most medical field careers being dominated by men, I would love to increase the number of women in this field. This volunteer experience impacted my entire future by enlightening me on what I would love to do for the rest of my life.
I am applying for this scholarship because education is very important to me and this money would help tremendously in pursuing my future goals. While maintaining my 3.68 grade point average, I also participate in clubs such as Key Club, Science Club, Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and play Volleyball and Cheerleading while also being a Varsity Football Statistician. I also have many amazing friends who voted me as Homecoming Queen this year. While in college, I plan to not only succeed inside of the classroom but also succeed in many outside activities as well. I believe I am a qualified candidate for this scholarship and hope to further my education as a motivated and well-rounded student. With this scholarship money and other need-based financial aid, I can complete my education and begin my path to giving back to the community.
