Sometime People Hide Things Inside by Skyler - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

My senior yearbook quote was “Sometimes people hide things inside because they’re afraid” -Jake Epping. I choose this quote from the show 11.22.63 which is based of off a Stephen King novel. To me this quote could mean different things to each person who reads it. This quote to me means that people keep things to themselves because they afraid of what others will think of them if they knew the truth.
In the show 11.22.63 Jake is actually from the future and goes back in time to try to save John F. Kennedy from being assassinated. He moved to Texas and becomes a school teacher. He ends up falling in love with the librarian but he has so many secrets that he’s keeping from her. The librarian finds out part of his main secret that he’s stalking the person who might have killed JFK. She ends up hating Jake but he doesn’t want to lose her so he explains everything to her and then she ends up helping him track down and save John F. Kennedy.
Personally I am a very closed off person and don’t let others know everything about me. When I heard this quote during the show I thought “wow, this quote describes me to a T”. I have always been a very closed off person so I relate to this quote on a deeper level. I don’t have deep dark secrets like I’ from the future trying to save the president but I do have secrets that I don’t want everyone to know. Everyone is afraid of something; I’m afraid that if everyone knows everything about me they would judge me in some way.
Today people are very quick to judge and most of the time they never even know the whole story. This is why most people are scared to be their true selves and are afraid of what people will think when they know the whole truth/story. I love this quote because I think that everyone can relate to it in their own personal way.
