The Drive for a Better Ride by Skylar - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
My high school experience has been a metaphorical roller coaster ride. I have had heart breaks, stressful nights, lack of direction and hope, but also days when I couldn’t stop grinning and times when I felt on top of the world. Both of which are similar to the ups and downs of the amusement ride. However, I was not strapped in the cart alone. I had my peers, best friends, teammates, and family strapped in right next to me. Some of them threw their hands in the air and screamed with joy, others grabbed my hand the whole time, a couple got on, and a few got off. No matter the person or the type of rider they were, I am thankful for them because they were the best part of my high school experience. I can not think of one fond memory that does not involve at least one of them, and even the unpleasant memories were just a tad bit better because I had someone right there beside me making me feel better. The bonds and memories I have made with these people will follow me for the rest of my life, and they made the last four years of my life pretty spectacular.
However, I have realized that the only friends I have gained over the years have been found through sports, and if I didn’t participate in sports I don’t know who all I would have strapped in beside me on my roller coaster. When realizing this fact, it dawned on me that there may be students in my high school that may not have found their group yet. If I hadn't have found my friends, I would have had a pretty miserable time at high school and I would never wish that upon anyone. In attempt to make everyone's experience better,I would strive to give the students more opportunities to interact with their peers, if I was elected student body president. I would activate more incentives, advertise the sports games more, reach out to all social groups to encourage club participation, and so much more. The opportunities are endless because I have the drive to make things better and I do not give up. If I was able to give them the opportunity, then maybe the best part of their high school experience could be the same as mine.
