Math Teacher by Siree - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed I would become a math teacher. Saying that is honestly unlike me because I am not the greatest at math but I think that is because I haven't had a good teacher at all in my high school math classes. I was the best at math in middle school and that is all because I had some of the best teachers. They took their time and really tried to teach to me. To me that is what makes a great teacher.
Being in the public school system, teachers are forced to be more so focused on the test scores of students rather than the retaining of information. This is the problem with the school system today. From the first day of school we are prepared for all of the exams we have to take. There's pre-test and post-test and quarterly test and AP exams. My math and science teachers are usually the ones that do not care about the actual retention of the material as much as they care about our test scores. Which to me seems odd because to get good test scores we have to know the material.
I notice that my math and science teachers don't take the time to give individual help as often as my english teachers do. This is why I actually want to be a teacher or some sort of educator because I don't think we get the attention we deserve as students. If I was a math teacher I would teach the curriculum as in depth as possible and make sure I am available as often as possible for any individual help needed by my students.
These are things I wish my teachers would do for me so I could possibly be a better math student but I have faith that our future educators will fix this problem. Students need help! Its up to teachers to give it to them.
