You Are What You Do by simran - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Traveling allows you to escape the reality of stress, responsibilities, and exposes you to a new environment . In my lifetime, I have traveled to India, New Zealand, England, and Italy. Speaking from experience, studying abroad would be very benefitial to my education because it would allow me to have a deeper connection with my education. Furthermore, it would allow me to develop the skills needed when working with different walks of people as well as allow me to evolve as a student.
Sitting in a classroom learning about world history, staring at pictures in a textbook can get repetitve and frankly, boring. Instead, what if you had the opportunity to actually go to a country and learn about the it’s history in person. Not only are you learning the material in more depth, but you are also having fun with what you are learning. Personally, I am a visual learner. Reading textbooks or listening to lectures is not as beneficial as for example actually going to a museum seeing artifacts on display. Studying abroad is not only fun but it allows you to meet a diverse group of people.
When you go to college, there’s such a diverse group of people to meet and study with. In secondary school, you are stuck with similar people based on where you grew up. However, if you studied abroad in college you would be given the opportunity to meet people and even learn some of their traditions, languages, and even get involved with their community. This is especially an amazing opportunity for those who want to learn a new language or want to learn about multiple cultures around the world. Living in one place for 4 years can make students feel stuck before they even start their careers.
Being enriched in a different country’s community, food, and celebrations will affect your perspective and allow you to evolve as a person. When you enter college, you will not graduate as the same person you were when you first started attending college. College allows you to evolve in new ways so imagine how much you would evolve if you studied abroad in Italy or Tokyo for example.
In conclusion, studying abroad in college would allow you to create a deeper connection with your education, give you the skills you need to work with different walks of people, and help you evolve as a student. Studying abroad fulfills your desire to travel as well as get a good college education in order to be successful in your future career. College in general usually opens your horizons so imagine the impact studying abroad in college would have on yourself.
