The Art of Communication by Simone - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed and I had the opportunity to enrich someone’s life by teaching them something new, it would most definitely be the subject of Spanish.
In the 8th grade, I had the pleasure of taking a Spanish I class that counted as a high school credit and that was the main incentive for me but after a day in the class, that all changed very quickly.
Although I was always interested in the language, with Dora episodes being my only prior knowledge, I had less than high hopes of learning something useful for my future. In that class we jumped immediately into a whirlwind of all things related to the beautiful language: it’s culture, traditions, food, and songs. That was the moment I fell in love with not just the language but the culture. We learned about all of the different types of foods, songs to the climate and traditions.
After that Spanish class, I couldn’t get enough of the language, leading me to continue on to Spanish II then Spanish III. Now, being a senior in high school, I have never been so academically or more importantly, personally, grateful for deciding to take Spanish as that 8th grader. Going into college next year, I plan to minor in Spanish. I plan to minor in Spanish not only because I want to further enrich my future, but also because I want to be a surgeon, and I will be saving the lives of everyone regardless their culture and language. Being able to understand where they come from and how they choose to communicate will help me better connect with people and that is the most important thing to me.
I truly believe that in order to be successful in a society such as the one we have today, we must be able to fully connect and communicate with not only just people “like ourselves” but also the people not like us because everyone has something to offer, to teach, to learn, and to enrich.
It is my opinion everyone’s duty to life to the fullest, and that means doing everything possible to connect with the world around us. That being said, if the roles were reversed and I had the pleasure to teach someone something new, it would be Spanish, and not just the language, but the culture and beauty of learning someone else’s way of life.
