Why I am Majoring in Fashion by Silvia - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was a young girl, subconsciously, fashion had always been a part of my life. I am choosing to major in fashion because it is what I love to do. It allows me to express myself through clothing, be creative, be teleported back to my childhood, and challenge myself. I've spent countless hours surrounded by fashion, yet I can't seem to get sick of it.
Around the age of 10 I had gotten an expensive Christmas doll that I desperately wanted, but because the cost of this doll was a pretty penny, it left not much money to buy clothes for it. My father had only bought one additional outfit besides the outfit that the doll came with, which I cherished and kept in pristine condition as it was very beautiful. The additional outfit was a teal/turquoise ballerina set that consisted of a leotard with a skirt attached to it, light blue tights, ballerina shoes, and a matching headband.
Because this doll could only change between these two outfits though, it prompted me to create more garments for it. I distinctly remember my favorite piece of clothing that I made; a cheetah-print pair of shorts made from old leggings that didn't fit me anymore. I had sewn a fake button for decorative purposes, and even though the hand-sewing was bad because I had no knowledge on how to properly construct something, the garment did stay in place and didn't break apart.
Making clothes for my doll was only a small way in how fashion took place in my life since I was young. I indulged in a book that came with pre-made croquis and sticker accessories that allowed me to design my own garments. Letting my imagination and creativity take over was such a fun time for me, and still is to this day.
For the past 3 years I have been a part of my schools fashion class and have learned so much along the way. I have met life changing people and have learned more about myself and the world of fashion. My sewing skills have tremendously improved as well, which makes me proud of myself and grateful for all of the opportunities that I have received. The precious connections that I have made would not have been possible if it werent for my fashion class. I believe that I have grown as a person because of it, gained confidence, and learned to be proud of the work that I am able to create.
Though I still have a long way to go in the world of fashion, I am working hard each day and taking it one step at a time. Fashion is something so dearly to me that I hold close to my heart, so I never plan on letting it go.
