A Positive New Year by Sierra - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

Every year I make a New Year’s resolution that usually has something to do with how much weight I want to lose or how much I want to exercise. This year is different, though, and I plan on following through with it. This year my New Year’s resolution is to be happy and seek positivity in my life. This may not seem like it is related to me becoming a better student but it is. In order to be a better student I need to want to expand my knowledge and not become complacent. Positivity and happiness will help me to be successful as the student that I want to be.

Being complacent will not help me improve as a student. If I am complacent I will just want to get through classes instead of getting the most out of every course. This is where positivity comes in. On days that I feel too tired to be in class or I am just having a bad day in general, I need to start listing off reasons as to why I should be happy to be in class. Some of these reasons may be that I am privileged enough to be able to attend college or that I want to accomplish my goals of finishing college in four years and starting my social work career in helping homeless youth. This will help to put things into perspective and motivate me to be successful in every course.

2016 will be the year of positivity for me and I will be successful as a student because of it. Keeping a positive outlook on everything that is thrown at me will help me reach my goals, gain more knowledge, and get the most out of my education. This is going to be a good year for me and I cannot wait to see what is in store.
