The Student Artist by Shyann - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
Growing up in Wilkinson County, I’ve created the reputation of being my county’s most dependable artist. Whether a student asked for a pair of shoes to be restored, a coach desired for their field to be spray-painted, or the staff needed a portrait of the principle to be drawn, I was the student they call upon. Because of this, I believe my artistic abilities have positively impacted my high school, as well as its study body.
To use as an example, I have served a number of volunteer hours by face painting at my school’s local festivals. These festivities, which includes primary, elementary, middle, and high school students, are outings the school would use to raise money for things students would enjoy, such as discipline-free parties for the elementary students, or better snacks for the primary students. By volunteering for every event, my school raised a good amount of money on my face-painting booth alone. Another way I’ve used my artistic abilities to help the school is by designing a shirt to spread literacy awareness. Every year, our school holds a local “Ride for Literacy” event where they sell shirts to students and staff. For three consecutive years, I’ve created designs for the school to use, and as an award, many people of my county walked, wearing my designs.
A way I believe I have influenced my school’s student body is by being so vocal about my passion for art. Several times, other students have told me how my school involvement as an artist has inspired them to improve not only their efforts in being an artist but as a student as well. As an artist who desires to inspire change, this meant the world to me. I am very grateful for the impact my art efforts have had on my high school and its student body, and I only hope that it will have nearly as great of an impact on the world outside of high school.
