#KEP by Shontis - April 2018 Scholarship Essay
My hashtag KEP stands for knowledge equals power. People usually want to earn a college degree because they think that it leads to having or even earning more money. I believe that is the case for some but not all, I think going to college and earning a degree has more value than just a couple more thousand dollars. Many people in the world say money is power and I agree but only up to a certain extent. People can strip and rob you of everything you have except for the knowledge you have chosen to pursue. I value Education over everything and I don’t believe that teachers get the credit they deserve. My college degree will get me in the field of education so can teach kids and spread all my thoughts on education and how important it is. Kids now don’t even understand that there are kids our age now that aren’t given the same opportunities. When I was younger my mom taught me to pay attention in school and show all my teachers that I was a really smart girl. For the most part, I proved myself to all my teachers and had pretty good relationships with them personally. Sixth grade is the year I started slacking and wanted nothing to do with school and thinking back to those days now, I am ashamed that I thought school was overrated and it wasn’t cool to be a nerd. I’m a senior in highschool now, and the only thing I want to be is a nerd. I want to embrace the side of me that I hated in sixth grade. Getting this scholarship will not only help me do that financially but it will give me hope that others believe and agree with me as well.
