Literature by Sherri - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Part of me would love to be a teacher. If I were to end up pursuing that path, I would likely teach one of two very different areas:
Kindergarten
High School Anatomy
Here’s why:
I've always loved kids, and one summer, I worked in a preschool class of 4 and 5 year olds. Based upon my experience working with other age groups, it's the best age group to work with. They're absolutely wonderful, excited to play and learn, and the attention and care they give you as a teacher is the greatest.
Plus, elementary school is the foundation a student will have for the rest of their school careers. A bad elementary school teacher, or experience with a certain subject can turn a student off to schooling throughout the rest of their career. I would love to work in that environment.
Now, high school: African American Literature was by far my favorite subject in high school, and I had a wonderful teacher who was loved by everyone - even some who weren't her students! It was really inspirational for me being a student of hers, and when I took her class I thought that if I was ever half the teacher she was I could make many students experience in that class amazing. That class was one of the main factors of me now pursuing African American studies .
Teaching high school and teaching kindergarten can be vastly different, but are fun in different ways, and both allow you to leave a lasting (and hopefully great) impression on a student.
