Bustamante Hospital for Children by Sheridan - May 2018 Scholarship Essay
As a volunteer at the Bustamante Hospital for Children in the island of Jamaica, every holiday that I receive from school, I travel to the island and worked within the TLC Department. My volunteer description includes ensuring that every child on my level is satisfied with their supplies and treatment, and the regular distribution of tender loving care to anyone that needs it. I also assisted with the X Ray process for the children who were in need. When I started volunteering, I realized the need that these children has for treatment in which could not be fully administered to them because of the lack of resources. To this day, in some parts of the world, the same thing happens. This then becomes a issue where some countries do not have the resources to provide medical help to adults and children who are in dire need of it. My experience has changed my way of thinking drastically as I become more and more passionate everyday about helping those in need and hoping that one day - I could be a change in this world. This issue forces me to think analytically and slowly figure out the root of all these problems all over the world. It made me realize that these issues cannot be solved on its own, and it taught me the importance of being there for each other. My experience taught me to love more, care more, and it showed me that not everything is as it seems. I realized that in order to see a change in situations like these, I must first initiate the change that I would like to see in my community and those around me. It taught me that uniting is important, and so is resilience. I gained resilience from my time volunteering and I could not have happier with the lessons that I have learnt. Helping people then became my passion, and volunteering at Bustamante Hospital for Children taught me how much more important my education is, so that I will be able to achieve my goals in a career as a Doctor.
