A New Perspective by shelby - January 2015 Scholarship Essay
Do you ever sometimes wish your teachers could think exactly how you think? Life would sure be a lot easier if we could each have a teacher who catered specifically to our preferred learning style. Unfortunately, in most cases, teachers are trained to teach to a general class of students, rather than meeting only one persons needs. For some students, this is not a problem at all. But, for other students, they may need more of a one on one kind of help from the teacher.
If I had one piece of advice for a teacher who wanted to help me learn, it would be that I am very analytical. I think only in a linear fashion, and I prefer doing my work independently. I do some of my worst work when it comes to participating in group projects, or having to collaborate with others. It's not that I don’t get along well with others,I actually really enjoy being around people. I just prefer to get my work done on my own, in a quiet setting.
Also, another analytical trait of mine is that i cant ever grasp onto "the big picture". By that, I mean that a teacher needs to explain step by step what needs to be done, in order for me to get my work accomplished. I tend to struggle when teachers pass out work sheets or projects, and ask that we figure it out on our own. Although yes, I may have the ability to figure it out, I prefer the teacher explains what needs to be done, so I can be sure my work is done right.
If I could go back and tell my previous teachers this information, I would. Unfortunately, I didn’t even really realize this about myself until I was a senior in high school. If i could, I would have told them what my strengths and weaknesses are. I also would of worked harder at my weaknesses, had I known they were effecting my grades as much as they did. Maybe then, the teachers would have had a whole new perspective on how to teach their class.
