"I Volunteer As Tribute" by Shelby - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

Of all the characters that I have read about in my life, one stands out the most. This character is brave, intelligent, and confident. These are all characteristics that I myself would like to develop. This character cares for others and puts the needs of others before her own. The character that I am describing can be none other than Katniss Everdeen.

Katniss has been a role model to millions of readers. She embraces the fact that, yes, she is a woman but she can also be a hero. I think many little girls look up to her the same way little boys look up to Spider Man or Bat Man. Katniss is a character that has influenced my life in many different ways. She reminds me to always be brave no matter what the situation is. She has taught me to put the needs of others above my own; her character in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins has become an icon of beauty and intelligence. This has encouraged me throughout difficult courses in college. In conclusion, Katniss is confident in herself and the people around her. She surrounds herself with friends and family to lean on for support.
