I'd Make Anatomy & Physiology a Skele-TON of Fun by Shelby - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
I am currently taking Anatomy and Physiology as my 4th year of science and I think if I taught this class I could make the content clearer and easier through creative activities and teaching and trying to relate my teachings to other subjects/ daily activities.
If I had it my way I would do creative and fun activities for my students to learn from. I would break down my units and morph them all into creative activities like art, games, songs, crafts, etc. I would do this to not only make my class more interesting but this would help students remember from the different projects that we would do in class. I myself had a history teacher who always had us doing crafts and games so we could easily remember content and everyone in her class not only enjoyed history for once, but passed with flying colors. She definitely made me realize why I had to work harder in other classes and it was because the little projects she would do kept me engaged and helped my memory while in other classes i just had to study notes and listen to lectures. But I specifically want to reverse roles with my teacher for anatomy and physiology because learning about the human body is so amazing and intriguing but I feel like it would be a million times better if we did more creative and wacky crafts. There's a lot of vocab and memorization involved and I would make songs for each unit so nobody would forget the parts of the skeleton or muscles or parts of a brain, etc. I would also want my students to sculpt their own skeletal structures and brains and such from play-do and play memorization games to make sure they would never forget anything about the human body.
I really love this class and the content is so intriguing and most of the time I'm engaged and interested in my teacher's lectures but I really would want to teach it to make it less of a dry class. I have a very creative and musical mindset so I feel like I could really help those who struggle with straight vocab and content memorization by engaging them in activities they would have fun doing. I know I myself get overwhelmed sometimes from all the science of a single human body and I would love to teach this class in my own creative way to help students who struggle. I would also get a lot out of teaching this class creatively because I would always find new ways to creatively teach and I would still be learning through my students creativity, and I think that's a beautiful thing.
Overall, I would love to teach my Physiology and Anatomy class because it is a subject I enjoy but sometimes struggle with so I would love to teach it in my own fun and creative way. I know I would love it if my teacher would give us artsy and creative assignments instead of online notes and practice quizzes!
