Curiosity Educated the Cat by Shelbi - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
Why did the chicken cross the road? Why did Lewis and Clark explore the unknown land with an unknown naive? Why did Sir Francis Drake circumnavigate the globe? The answer is the same reason as to why I work for a degree. Curiosity. Most people are afraid of the unknown. They fear trepidation and what may lie ahead. As for myself, I chased the fear and unknown, just to see what it was like.
Let’s be honest, college is an awkward and uncomfortable transition for nearly everybody. Students are literally thrown into a world of textbooks, essays, and never ending hours of study. Limits and morals are pushed every day in and outside of the collegiate classroom. For me, I craved it. My soul was yearning for adventure and to explore my curiosities of knowledge. The idea of meeting new people, gaining new experiences, and making mistakes was intriguing. I chased that curiosity and I have no regrets.
The curiosity of what college culture was like threw me into a time of unorthodox research methods. I was watching movies like Animal House and Legally Blonde. I was reading about sororities and other organizations online. I wanted that life so bad. The movies and books made college seem so easy and fun. Turns out, it is not all frat parties and easy A’s.
Curiosity is a beautiful quality because it is like a science. I formulated a hypothesis of what college may be like, then conducted my research. Once in college, I learned that the movies could not be further from the truth. This caused a huge wake up call for me socially and academically. My curiosity of college, of the real world, of people was nourished by my experiences and I would not take back a single day of my days as a university student. My curiosity taught me better study habits and to expand my mind into different fields of study. Without these tests and tribulations, I would never have explored unusual subjects and found my passion in veterinary technology and medicine. I firmly believe curiosity did not kill the cat; it educated him.
