A Hobbit Gets a Ring: The Measure of Commitment by Sheena - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

Frodo Baggins. In my mind, he is the greatest of all the characters in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic tale, Lord of the Rings. He begins his journey naive to the plight of the world beyond the Shire's sheltered borders. But when he is bestowed a ring, the harsh realities crash down upon him without warning. He makes a choice, when no other can, to commit himself to saving the world. He desires neither power or praise. His humility and pure intent shine through the trials and tribulations.

Frodo is a character we could all learn from. I know I have. I first read Lord of the Rings when I was in primary school and he has never left me. Frodo made a choice, not knowing the consequence, not knowing how far it would push him. Yet, even through it all, even when he wished he had chosen another path, he stayed true to his promise. He followed through. I try to remember this when I feel like something is just too hard. The fate of the world may not be in my hands, but I know that a lot can happen to yourself and those around you when you keep to your promises and find your inner strength.
