Adaptability by Shaylene - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

In college, there's an endless list of skills that anyone and everyone will tell you are essential to surviving. From study skills and note-taking, to simple things such as just being sociable and joining clubs, you could write, speak, and ramble for hours about all the possible skills. But one skill in particular strikes me as a bit more important than the others, if not interconnected to the others.

This skill is adaptability, the ability to change and adapt to your ever-changing environment. The whole college experience revolves around change, and change requires adapting.

For many students, college means going out of state, a new adventure. It means new faces, places and responsibilities. For some it means a first job, it means stepping so far out of your comfort zone you can't possibly remember what comfort once was. Granted, some people adjust much faster than others, but regardless, it's still something that is done.
In order to keep from melting down at every change that hits you, you have to adapt. You have to figure out that new route to class, how to cover your tuition fees and how to get your books. And if you never change, you never grow, you never learn, and you can never succeed without changing and adjusting to your conditions.
