Dinner With the President by Shayla - October 2017 Scholarship Essay
If I could pick one U.S President to have a dinner with, out of the 43 that have faithfully served this great country, I would have to pick the one President that everyone knows about, the "Father of our Country," our first President, George Washington. After many years of family history work, I found that I am related to George Washington very far back in my ancestry line. George Washington was a man of much courage, determination, and faith. He fought many battles, made many important decisions, and took on the calling as the first President of the United States of America. As a child he didn't receive much education, but he was born with many talents to lead and serve. He fought and served as the head of the Virginia Militia in the French and Indian War, and he led the Continental Amy in the American Revolution. I would love to meet him, ask him questions about his life growing up, how it was fighting and commanding armies during war time, and lastly ask him how it was being the first President of the United States of America.
I absolutely love history, especially American history, and I would love to ask President George Washington how life was back in the late 1700s and early 1800s. What did they wear, how did they talk, what did they do in their free time. Everything that we learn in our history classes is a from a second or third-hand source, and being able to talk to George Washington in person would give me the chance to hear firsthand how life was back in his time. I would want to ask him how it was like as a child growing up, did he play sports, musical instruments, and did he have many friends. I would love to grow close to him and become good friends. I have looked to George Washington as an example my whole life, he has inspired me, motivated me to do hard and scary things in my life, and made me want do everything I can to serve my family, friends, and community to the best of my ability.
I have been running as a sprinter on the track and field team for six years now and have learned a lot, and gained a lot of experience dealing with hard work and determination. At times when I was really nervous to race at track meets, I would think of George Washington riding across the Delaware River, or leading an army into battle. He did that so that we could live in this beautiful, and free country today. Thinking of him gives me the courage to step into my sprinting blocks and race as fast as I can. I don't run for the glory or for the trophy's, I run for my family, and for the brave men and women like George Washington who made it possible for me to be where I am and who I am today.
When George Washington was elected president, he had no President before him to look up too, and to learn from, just by the great man that he was, was he able to become one our greatest presidents. He had to set the example, and unite a nation that was once thirteen separate colonies. When he became President he stated that he was not qualified for such a calling, but would serve the country to the best of his ability. I would love to ask him if he was excited or nervous about being the first U.S President. I would love to hear how it was creating the U.S Constitution and the basic foundation of our government, and why they did the things they did. I would want to know too, if he was pleased or unhappy with the way our country is today.
I am so grateful that we had George Washington as a soldier and a leader, to risk his life on our behalf, and to take on such a heavy burden and challenge as he did when he took on the calling as our President. He was selfless, courageous, determined, and knowledgeable. I would want to meet with him, because he had a good heart, and I think it would be good if everyone could learn from his example and his works. Maybe then the world could finally be happy, peaceful, and free only if we were to all be like George Washington was. If I were to have dinner with one U.S President it would definitely be George Washington who I have looked up to and loved my whole life.
