Reversing History by Shayla - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

All through my life one of my favorite things to do on a lazy day was watch history documentaries. The History Channel would be on all day, and I would watch them like they were cartoons. Once I got into high school I realized how beneficial watching those documentaries were. Not only did I already know what we were discussing, but I genuinely enjoyed learning about it all over again. It was never boring. I was fascinated by the history I was not alive for.
If the roles were reversed, I would teach world history. From the beginning to the end I would get to teach it all. I would show my students why moments in history changed their lives, and how their actions today will affect their futures. I would get to see first hand my students reactions to the highs and lows of the times before them. I would never be bored of teaching them the joys of history.
I would choose world history because I would not be confined to one era, religion, culture, or place. There would be so much material I would get to cover. So many fun and interesting projects and lesson could be created. Plus unlike American history, you get to look at the effects that things like the great depression and World Wars had on all countries; learn about all the great conquerors and old empires. I get to teach about culture and open up students mind to new and exciting worlds. I want to be able to give my student a better understanding of the world they live in.
Being a world history teacher would be amazing. I would be able to teach about something I love every day. Making students understand the world and all its wonderful cultures would be a truly rewarding profession. Having some kind of impact in a developing person’s life would be the greatest achievement in life.
