Making an impact by Shawn - September 2013 Scholarship Essay

My father was the eldest of six and felt it was important to set an example for his family that education is important. Being from a poor family he had to work full time in order to pay for school, money was just one obstacle he overcame to pursue his dream. Geology was always his passion so naturally he followed that path in college ending up with his bachelors. Sadly after college he didn’t pursue his dream, but rather worked for the USPS for 30 admirable years to support his family. My father’s zest for studying something he loved but not pursuing a career in it has always bothered me to the extent that it inspires me. I am pursuing my degree in Electrical Engineering because I have always been passionate about clean energy, power systems, and programing. As times change clean energy is going to be a big standard across the world and needs new bodies to pick up where the pioneers of green energy started. In this field, I fell that I will have the chance to help others across the globe with my studies and research in making energy available to anyone yet also environmentally friendly. The industry is continuously changing and growing, and I want to be a part of this revolution. Unlike my father I want to make an impact in my field. His accomplishments made me want to enroll in college but his short comings inspire me to work harder than everyone else.
