My Major by Shawn - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
I never had a big plan for my future. It seemed like everyone around me had something they were passionate about. When I was younger, I had big plans, the same as any other kid. I would say stuff like “I want to become the president!” or “I’m going to be a police officer!” Of course back then, I didn’t have an understanding of the responsibilities that came with these jobs.
I enjoy being creative, and finding a solution to certain issues is a rewarding experience. In my second year of high school, I suddenly decided that I wanted to go into film. Movies were a large part of my life and I had recently watched “Kingsmen: The Golden Circle” which had left me in awe. I was truly inspired, and was overflowing with ideas. The only obstacle was bringing these ideas into reality. I ended up creating a few of these films, but they never quite fit the image I had in my mind due to budget constraints and other issues.
During this time, I consumed a lot of content talking about films. I also ended up getting some content recommended to me about the creation of games. I ended up watching a lot of that too, which led me to my current major. I realized that it wasn’t the creation of a certain subject that I was interested, but the act of creating something in general. Creating something with my own hard work is what led me to my current major: Computer Science.
I know it’s a common stereotype which pops up often, but I aim for a future career in game development/programming. Video games have been a large part of my high school days and I enjoy them because a lot of them are very similar to films, just with more player involvement.
