Professor at Philosophy by Shawn - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
"If" is like a big question, a statement that has many outcomes. A question that is often avoided sometimes. A "if" statement is sometimes good or bad but it all depends on who is saying "if". Lots of theories are based on the "what if" statement. This may seem like it has no connection to the main question, “If you were a college professor, what class would you teach and why?". The connection is, there are so many combinations of answers for that question. I would love to answer this question and give an honest answer that goes beyond any other answer. I personally like thinking beyond, taking it to the next step. A simple question has only simple answer, this question may seem simple but it requires a lot of thinking. I think of this is a great question to single out who is best in fit to receive this scholarship. Thinking beyond is no easy task but easy for those who like to get their voice heard. Beyond thinking is what made today’s present world we all know become better, safer, and futuristic. This is where the beyond thinking is taking place.
If I were a professor, I would teach philosophy. Teaching philosophy is something that I personally would enjoy and it would be wonderful to see those who are thriving, eager to learn about this topic. This would give me the chance to meet others who were just like me, sitting, waiting to understand this subject. It would be easy teaching this class because I’ve had a lot of ideas that are involved with philosophy. I would consider this a hobby of mine, thinking about life, metaphysics, ethics, and questioning everything about philosophy. Having these thoughts about what life is, made me realize that there is more to life than just work, school, and other activities that are time consuming. I would enjoy having this career not just for the deep philosophical discussions with the class but to hear their thoughts on what philosophy is to them. To understand a philosopher’s way of thinking, their logical thinking that came up with these complex ideas that developed into theories. To acknowledge all the philosophers back then who didn’t know what they were getting themselves into until they made a major discovery. To understand why they were genius’. This is something that I would wake up to every morning and be happy. Making a change through this one class by helping others realize their potential and look at those philosophers and say, “I want to make a change like them”. This is something to be enthusiastic about, eager to move forward with ease.
Now I would like to say Thank You. Thank you for giving me a chance to think about what class I would teach if I were a professor and the opportunity to win this scholarship.
