Numbers Around the World by Shauna - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

Throughout our years in the educational system, we realize where our strong points are. Personally, I found my math skills to be my strongest point as early as freshman year. When I was put into Algebra I Honors, I knew I was supposed to be in there. My ability to pick up on math as easy as it was came as a surprise to me because I did not know I was capable of doing so. Throughout my four years in high school, I was out into five different math classes in which I excelled in all. I doubled up on math courses two out of the four years so I could be out into more advanced classes the following year. In tenth grade I took Algebra II Honors and Geometry honors. Junior year I aced pre-calculus honors then finally senior year I had advanced placement statistics and advanced placement calculus. Clearly, math is my strongest point and for some odd reason I enjoy it.
If I was to grow up and be a teacher, which is very possible, I believe I would teach lower math courses. By lower I mean geometry and algebra I. This is because I do not have much patience and will get frustrated if a student might not understand the lesson. Even though I have been this student many times, as a teacher I would not be happy. I'm very thankful for all the patient teachers I had and give much credit to those who deal with these types of students everyday. I understand lower math level classes will have confused students but it's also proven that algebra I is an easier concept to grasp rather than calculous.
Some teachers will not only teach the criteria they are meant to but also lessons that will stick with students forever. My freshman year my algebra teacher said something that I still remember to this day as a senior, "English teachers might interpret your sentence the wrong way, but in math the answer is always written in stone, numbers are definite." I admire the fact that numbers are the same all over the world and mathematicians are able to work together as one to get a specific answer.
Therefore I would teach lower level math classes. The future is bright and full of possibilities and it's always possible that this might happen in the end.
