Constructive Communications by Shaun - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

Teaching is an essential part of a society as students are given to the tools and information necessary to think critical about the world around and solve the multitude of challenges in the world. This process is furthered by the specialization of teaching by discipline and level as students are then continuously challenged in their courses and have a well-rounded education. Therefore, if I became an educator, I would prefer to be a college communications professor because communication plays a critical role in our society and in finding one’s self.

One of the major reasons for choosing to teach communications is because communication is essential for society. Language and the ability to communicate with others in a region is often considered to be one of the more defining criterion for a civilization, both historically and in the public consciousness. This is because many of aspects we consider fundamental to a society cannot function without the existence of some median for which people can communicate with one another. Without the ability to communicate, the cooperation required to build and progress civilizations would be too fragile to come into fruition. Thus, communication is a key prerequisite for society and its progression. This, in turn, means that teaching communications is a fundamental part of societal growth and essential for citizens to learn despite it’s more lackluster reputation.

Another reason to teach communications is that one can directly aid students in finding their voices and passions. Everyone has a voice, has a topic that they are passionate about and will stand up for. This zeal can reside in the realm of politics or religion or science or art. It doesn’t matter what that passion is; only that it exists and can be wielded in a positive manner. As a communications professor, one can help students find this passion and vocalize in a positive and definitive fashion, making it possible for these pupils to become that catalyst for change within the chaos of the world. Thus, teaching communications gives one the ability to change the world through the shapers of the future by helping them find themselves, their passions, and their own voice in the murky waters of the universe.

Therefore, teaching communications gives one the ability to change the world on a fundamental level. Due to the combination of the reasons discussed above, a communications professor can impact the world by teaching the future leaders of our world how to properly communicate with others throughout the world along with how to find and positively utilize a passion. A professor has the chance to shape those who will changing the world. This is why I would teach communications. The world needs concerned citizens who know how to properly explain and defend their beliefs while understanding what others are attempting to communicate. The world needs people who embrace their passion and use it to change the world for the better. A communications professor helps form these types of people. A communications professor helps students find themselves and their impact on this world.
