Stay woke by Sharlyne - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

In a world where a curtain of fantasy fills the minds of young people, it creates a false view of what the true reality is. For as long as I have been able to watch movies and understand what they demonstrated I was always prepared for those fun scenes of high school. High school has always been portrayed as this big part of life where one would have the time of their lives going to parties and having these big rallies. What is not shown is how difficult and hard those events truly are in a world different from those who do have the financial resources. Something that I wish I could change for my school for the better is to be able to get better financial help to expand our school to have as many opportunities as other schools in our district.

I go to a high school that is in a district that has many schools with a lot of financial support from parents with well-put-out jobs connections, and companies. Unlike those schools, my school does not have the same support as the other schools. The reason for this is that we have a very diverse school that brings in students from different areas of the world, more specifically Afghanis, Mexicans, and foreign exchange students. These students come from families who moved to the United States to look for a better life so being able to have a good job quickly after coming into the United States isn’t going to be easy. Majority of the time my school as one comes together to try and help out the students in need of necessities. However, it is a struggle to try and help the majority of our students and their families because we are only one group of people who are still young. Furthermore, not only is it a struggle as students to help out our community but also we don’t gain much support from big corporations, or companies due to bad representation from past history.

Moreover, a way that I would help my school get better financial help to better represent who we are as a diverse school is by communicating my thoughts to companies on what could benefit them if they helped us out. An example of this would be epic wings. My school has local epic wings that the majority of our school goes to. If they were able to help donate or help us fundraise for our school we could keep on supporting them in bigger ways. A way that we can help better them is by expanding their business to other places around our city. Also, another way that I can help better my school is by putting myself to the community and involving my voice in the city council to help our school out by donating or just putting a good word about what we do as a community at our school. This does not only benefit my school but also the community due to its well-knowledge information of what are school puts on for those people in need.

Another way that I would help my school is by being able to bring news reporters to see the types of things that happen at my school like in other schools. If we were given a broader view of our school we would not be where we are financially. The ability to have news reporters or just being recorded and being seen by the world would bring in bigger people than those in our community to help out those people to whom they either relate or want to help. Opening that door would lead to so much help for our sports, academics, and our school campus a lot. Another thing that could be added to this social or worldwide thing would be social media. If I had the authority to make one of our videos viral so the world could see us it would be very opening to our school community.

In conclusion, if I had the authority to change the view of my school to make sure it gets the financial support like the other schools in my district I would do everything in my power to represent it on how I see my school and how we give to the community. Everyone deserves an opportunity regardless of where one is from.
