Role Reversal in Math by Sharan - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed, I would teach Algebra. I would teach Algebra because I have plenty of awards from math. My teachers also call me a human calculator. I was also the captain of the math team in which our team placed second overall.
Math has always came easy to me. My parents always encouraged me to study everyday growing up. They always made me study up my multiplication which always resulted in me getting yelled at till I got it right. I would like to thank them because in school students and the teachers call me a human calculator. Students always ask me for help or tutoring in Algebra. Algebra was really a subject that came to me easy. I always was in the library everyday reading Algebraic books. I also had A’s in math class.
Growing up awards were a huge deal to my parents. I never got a awards for sports, science and anything basically. When I was in 6th grade, my teacher encouraged me to join the math team. I was like why not, I might as well try. When we placed 2nd overall, I got my first ever award. I had a silver medal and a certificate saying that we placed 2nd overall. Ever since that day I have awards in math for things like 1st place in math competitions, maintaining a A overall in math, and math wiz award. I would teach math because it is apart of me. Math just lets me relax from any problems I have. Math is my calm, quiet, beach.
I want to major in math or dentistry. Math is something I can see me doing in the future. Math has always been a big part in life. I incorporate math from small things like counting money. I have been in a math environment where the teachers just give the basic information and let you do the work. I would like to make math fun like I do. Math is really necessary in life because it is everywhere. Learning about and appreciate math diversity in human thinking and accomplishments throughout history and around the world. For example, Great Pyramid of Giza was built due to math and it is one of the wonders of the world. I strongly believe everyone should know basic algebra because it causes us to think logically. Math plays a large role in my family. My parents always ask what's this number times this number minus this number. They are always in shock when I get the answer right.
I love math and so naturally I want to teach it in hopes to marry my two interests being I love the interactions with students and being able to share my knowledge with others and it being one of my job choices. I have been in honors classes where some students are really there to learn and have the same passion for the subject as I do. When I see people enjoy math like I do, it puts a smile on my face. Math is just fun once you get the hang of it.
I hope to teach math one day. Math is a fun subject that brings people together. Teaching is a fun experience and why not do something I love. Teaching math is a passion.
