Physics by Shapri - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

When I was an elementary school student sitting in class I was so enthusiastic about learning new things that were going to be used in my everyday life. When I went to middle school I started to feel that a lot of the stuff I was learning wasn’t really necessary, like I was wasting my time. I wasn’t that enthusiastic little girl anymore. It wasn’t until I became an eleventh grade student that I found the subject I loved, “Physics”. The word Physics sounded so intimidating, it sounded so hard, and it is hard. Physics is literally every subject together and I think that’s what makes it so complex. There is an English element in Physics. You have to analyze the question to get a good understanding of what exactly you have to do. A lot of times in physics, when attempting to answer a problem, you have to think about the history of the subject. For example, if you get a problem asking to find the gravitational potential energy of an object on Earth, the formula is GPE= (M (G)(H). They give us the mass(M) which is 95kg and they give us height(H) which is 105m. As you can see they didn’t give us gravity (G), but before we freak out we would just have to think about the history of physics. It was proven years ago, the gravity for Earth is 9.8m/s^2. So by knowing that we could apply that to our problem, that is where mathematics comes in. In this problem it really isn’t hard math, but it’s still math. By using basic mathematics we get the answer of 10290 Joules.
All these subjects mixed together is what made me love it so much. I feel that it would be an amazing opportunity to teach young adults physics because it makes them take every subject they know and think outside the box. That’s exactly what we need in this day and age, people thinking outside of the box. We need the youth to be innovators and leaders. In order to make the youth to see their potential, we must get their attention. We will never get their attention if we just focus on one subject. So if I was to be a professor, I would teach physics because it makes you apply all your knowledge from different subjects and attracts the attention from different kinds of people.
