" If you could have dinner with one U.S President (living or dead), who would is be and why? by Shantel - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
All the presidents domestic crises, others by international conflict, but all left their mark on history. If I could have lunch with any president it would the 16th the one and only Abraham Lincoln . I Choose Lincoln because coming from being lawyer , to having a government position , to member of The House Of Representatives to achieving the highest office in the land what was some of the challenges . I would ask Mr.Lincoln was his drive and intent guiding the union through those bloody years of conflict while abolishing slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation?President Lincoln you said again and again that your purpose in fighting the South was to save the Union, not to free the slaves. At first The Emancipation Proclamation was a military measure, it didn't apply to border slave states like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri, all of which had remained loyal to the Union he freed all slaves in Confederate areas of the South. However the Proclamation did not include slaves in non-Confederate border states and in parts of the Confederacy under Union control. Why not all states Mr.Lincoln? In Which this freed few to little slaves. Although you did believe that slavery was morally wrong did you believe in abolishing slavery? "that all men should be created equal " applying to blacks and whites alike this not meaning they should have the same social and political rights like all men, blacks had the right to improve their condition in society and to enjoy the earnings of their labor. In this way they were equal to white men, and for this reason slavery was inherently going to be unjust.? . Perhaps you did want to abolish slavery why do all this if your disagreeing with the equality of blacks an whites was really a disbelief of yours? The Emancipation Proclamation did change as the war got dragged out the meaning and purpose of the Civil War. The war was no longer just about preserving the Union it was also about freeing the slaves . Did this give you reconsideration about slavery?
The Gettysburg Address was a very a powerful message showing dedication an remembrance , it says things about liberty , bravery , struggles , freedom and dedication . Were these perhaps the key notes of the Address making sure to point out the bravery that was performed , the struggles that were encountered, the freedom that the slaves want an also the interference with individual liberty? Would this help make amends with the new nation that has been conceived? On January 31, 1865, the House of Representatives passed the Thirteenth Amendment, which made slavery illegal in the United States. The Thirteenth Amendment had two sections. Section one read: “Neither slavery, nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Section two stated that Congress had the power to pass legislation to enforce the abolition of slavery. Mr.Lincoln one last question if you had known that the purpose for fighting the south eventually change ,would fighting slavery be one of the main reasons in the beginning?
