From Running On The Track To Running The Meets by Shannon - June 2024 Scholarship Essay
In high school, informal education has shaped my personality by growing my confidence and maturity. My involvement in many activities has expanded my social circle and brought me out of my comfort zone. Especially in cross country and track, which are sports that have given me much-needed focus. These sports showed me the importance of time management and goal setting, which are qualities that have translated into my academic life. The discipline required to train consistently and the progress I've made athletically has showed me that hard work is an investment -- and the outcome is rewarding.
One of the most enriching aspects of cross country and track have been the social connections I've made with my coaches, athletes, opponents, and parents. Meets are vibrant events where I've had the chance to interact with a lot of people, which has boosted my confidence and enhanced my communication skills. Learning through a book and lecture is one thing, but to be a functioning human comes from the experiences of informal education.
Volunteering at youth track meets has also been fulfilling in my personal growth. It's given me a rewarding experience to help younger athletes run their events. I wouldn't have had this opportunity to give back to my community if it wasn't for the connections I have made during my athletic career in high school, showing me the importance of maintaining a positive reputation and cultivating relationships with others.
