Confidence and Courage by Shannon - March 2015 Scholarship Essay
Student leadership requires management skills. Leaders oversee budgets, prioritize work, and oversee other tasks. These skills can help a student to manage and prioritize their own schedule. These students are able to perform academically and contribute to other activities as well. Leaders become responsible not only for themselves, but for others in their group. A strong sense of responsibility will help a college student stay on track and succeed.
Participating in leadership activities can result in networking that will help a student get the connections they need to succeed in college and beyond. Opportunities, such as internships and mentoring, can become available to students who have met other leaders via leadership programs.
Perhaps most importantly, student gain confidence. Having one’s accomplishments recognized is empowering. Empowered students do better academically, but also lead clubs and extracurricular activities that make the college experience whole. Confident students are willing to take on challenging work, and believe they can succeed. They have the courage to look for more opportunities and meet others. I believe this is the most important factor in one’s college experience. To have the confidence and courage to do more than attend class may be the difference between surviving and thriving.
