The Little Things by Shannon - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

Despite my lack of belief in the Catholic religion, I am a well-known member of my local church. Even if I don't share the same values as what's being teached, I've always enjoyed the sense of community I felt. I commonly volunteer at the church as a Teacher's Aide and I've met so many wonderful kids. Typically, I work with the younger children who are on the spectrum. My responsibility is to keep them calm and to talk them down when any outbursts occur. Even though they were just kids, they have their own version of frustration and stress that shouldn't be overlooked just because they're young.
This is the biggest contribution I've made to the community because I gave those kids a person that they were able to find comfort when they felt the most emotionally vulnerable. Though this contribution seems little on paper, it is the biggest in those little kid's eyes. Everytime they see me and run up to hug me fills me with joy knowing that I've made a positive impact in their lives. I'm proud to have their artwork hanging on my fridge to remind me of my love to have a positive influence on the kids.
