Influential Elective by Shannon - September 2017 Scholarship Essay
Over the course of my high school career, I have taken many different electives that have influenced my life. I could go on and on about how each of them impacted me in some way. Choosing a single one is honestly a challenging task. If I had to select one, it would be my computer science and java course. In middle school, I took a preview course and never thought anything of it. It was another mandatory class I had to take. It came naturally to me, but at the time I was not interested.
However, when I entered my sophomore year, and everything changed when I took the first level of java. I greatly enjoyed my time in that class and it sparked my interest of computers. I thought about how I never knew how much could be done on a computer. I always limited myself to browsing the web and doing work for school, but now I realized that the possibilities are endless. I looked forward to those three classes a week.
When selecting classes for my junior year I made sure I choose Advanced Java as an elective. I wanted to further my knowledge of computers and continue my interest. Even along with the stress of junior year, I knew that I could always walk into computers and just relax because I enjoyed the class. Junior year flew by and before I knew it I was onto senior year taking AP Java. I have stuck with this elective for many reasons. The most important is of course my interest in computer sciences and my desire to learn more about it. I am thinking about continuing on this track in college. Another contributing factor to my love of computers is the teacher that I have had. He has taught all of my computer sciences courses. The classroom environment is always positive and lively. My teacher is extremely knowledgeable and prepared for every class lesson.
Overall, this course has been influential in my high school career. I have furthered my knowledge of computers and enjoyed myself greatly in this class. I hope to have a great year in computers and continue my learning in college!
