My Ideal Class by Shannon - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
There are many different courses to take at college; some are beneficial while other courses are not. If I were a college professor, I would teach a public speaking class. Public speaking classes teach valuable information, I learned a lot from my public speaking class, and I used what I learned to help me in my other classes.
First, the valuable information that public speaking classes teach. The professors share various tips and strategies to help you deliver your speech. One tip was to make eye contact with everyone in the room, at least once, to make the audience feel included. There are several types of speeches and each speech has its own special uses. Speeches can inform the audience about a certain issue or entertain the audience. The last piece of valuable information is how to give a good speech. Giving a good speech depends on the audience and how well you research your topic before presenting it to the audience.
Next, what I learned from my public speaking class. I learned how to connect with my audience. One way to do this is by picking a topic that is relevant as well as interesting to the age group that you will be speaking to. I also learned how to get their attention at the beginning of my speech. Just like there are several types of speeches, there are several ways to get the audience’s attention; for example, I might give a startling statistic related to my topic. The final thing that I learned from my public speaking class was how all speeches have three basic parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
Finally, how my public speaking class helped me. Through my public speaking class, I learned how to make my audience believe that I am credible on the topic that I am speaking on. I make myself credible by citing various sources during my speech. My public speaking class also helped me understand my audience better. To better understand your audience, use demographics such as age and gender. The ultimate benefit from my public speaking class would be that I am more confident and less nervous when giving speeches.
In conclusion, public speaking classes teach valuable information, I learned the basics of the class in addition to much more, and I applied what I had learned to other classes. A public speaking class is one of the most vital classes a college student can take to ensure success in his or her future career.
