The Fire Company by Shannon - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
Imagine a world where no one volunteered. No one did anything out of the kindness of their heart and did not expect anything in return. The world would be an awful place to live in. A place where no one would want to be. That is why it is so important to volunteer. To make the world a place that people want to live in. To be a person who does things out of the kindness of their heart and did not even expect to get anything in return for doing so. When someone volunteers they are helping out others. They are helping make the world a better place.
For my entire life I have volunteered at the Galena Volunteer Fire Company. I have volunteered there even before I could officially join as a member. The moment that I could walk and talk I was there volunteering. I would help out fundraisers to help raise money for the fire company. As I got older I would help out even more. I knew that I would never be paid or get anything because I was volunteering and that was just fine with me. I was making a difference in the community. By raising money for the fire company I was helping the fire company be able to afford new and nicer equipment to put on the fire trucks and the ambulance. With that equipment they would be able to put out fires and take care of the ill when they were on the ambulance better. Without the proper equipment they would not be able to give the care that they could or they would not be able to put out fires as fast as they could. Without the fire company when houses caught on fire, when people got into car accidents, when people got injured, and when there were so many other emergencies there would be no one there to help or it would take a long time to get help. By then the emergency may have taken a turn for the worse and would have had a very bad outcome. That is why I volunteer for the fire company and why it has inspired me to do even more to make a difference in the community.
When I volunteer at the fire company I know that I am doing my part to make a difference in the community, but I feel that is not enough. I know that I can do more and that there are ways for me to make an even larger difference in the community. There are others ways to make a difference. There are other people that I can help. Not everyone who needs help is in an emergency situation and needs the fire department called. So that motivates me to help those people and reach out to those people. When I became a high schooler and was old enough I joined my high school’s National Honor Society and then the National Spanish Honor Society. By joining those societies I knew that I would be able to volunteer even more and help more people than I would with just the fire company. I knew that I would be able to make an even larger difference in community. Wanting to make a difference in the community all stemmed from one small thing that I have grown up doing all of my life and still continue to do now. Just by volunteering at the fire company inspired me to do even more and make as big of a positive difference in the community as I can.
