Transcript of Lies by Shanice - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

If I die knowing nothing except a transcript of lies, I'd have no peace out of this life. "I yearn for the truth of the years, years ago" is a quote I cannot bear without. Our history books are born with bias, and plagued with a grave disease of deception. If it were in my power, I'd free the brainwashed slaves that are deemed to no more than a mere glimpse of information revolving the past. Their brains are not only poisoned but they are mislead into a whirlpool of fabrication. Hence the reason why, I cannot nonchalantly be a witness to such a heinous crime against humanity. If anything, I'd educate. Society is advanced enough to perform thorough research and produce history books that are not limited to restrictive boundaries of certain eras/aspects within various races and cultures. There shouldn't be enough room for ignorance to breathe after one studies such a reading.

Greed isn't bad if you're seeking something enlightening to make you think. Thinking is a rare commodity these days. I believe, if I, or any educated being continued on a journey to spread and enhance knowledge of life on earth thus far, (such as a history college professor ) future generations would be welcomed… or slightly ambushed with substantial amounts of opinions, theories, thoughts, stories, and outright facts dating billions of years ago. They could use such factors in order to engage in open-minded conversation, or to understand the present and prevent issues in the future. Quite frankly, the options with the opportunity to possess unlimited knowledge is endless. Especially, if we are living in a world where our children are raised to be compelled to use said opportunity to their advantage.

Unfortunately, I was raised in a generation where I was solely tested on my knowledge on the Great Depression, slavery within the walls of the United States, and the Holocaust throughout my entire K-12 career. I was left helplessly uneducated about the depths of African history prior to enslavement, alongside Asian culture and advancement, or even a mere fun fact of Canada (the country we share a border with). If we are capable to educate our children more, why wouldn’t we? Why should we continue to coerce them into an ignorant lifestyle. I, alongside hundreds of thousands of people, have spent a tad over a decade in school to only graduate with millions of unanswered questions, because we were denied the right to be informed due to a poorly constructed curriculum. Not only is that unfair, but it’s unnecessary.

We deserve better education and the ability to deplete ignorance. We as the human race, possess all necessary powers to do better. It is my dream to bear witness to such a thing, and as Victor Hugo has said “There is nothing like a dream to create a future.”
