Volunteering by Shaneva - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
In the next couple of deliveries, I lifted the final food basket from the food truck. I placed it in the trunk of a mothers car with her two tweens that sat in the backseat smiling appreciatively. She rolled her window down and whispered,"Thank you." I kindly replied “your welcome” and waved as she drove off. When I walked back to the food truck, one of the older volunteers commended me for my work, because I was the youngest volunteer there. At that moment, I was even more motivated to ensure I gave back to my community.
Volunteering often involves meeting twenty or more people in one hour or less. Making small talk with somebody who shares the same interests and is working on the same cause can become more than just a conversation. People who volunteer are able to build relationships with peers, improve family life, broaden their career skills, overcome self-doubt, and gain new opportunities. The smallest act can have a profound impact on someone.
An example, volunteering at food drives during the holiday season would be a favorite activity of mine. Communities that work together can make an immense difference in the lives of people. They are reminded that there is a world outside of themselves when they volunteer. Working with many different people from all walks of life opened my eyes to the world around me.
