Why A College Education is Important to Me by Shane - November 2023 Scholarship Essay

Being a barrier breaker and carrying on a long-lasting legacy is at the core of my DNA. I have a rich lineage of hard work and sacrifice, which is evident in my grandmother’s decision to sell her family home in Zimbabwe so that my father could have an opportunity to study in the United States. Her decision changed the trajectory of my lineage. My drive to go to college aligns with her decision and other barrier breakers such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Marva Collins–education pioneers. Their impact on education is unmatched and has created a pathway for me and others to attend college. It’s important that I actively contribute to the success of my lineage and continue to provide opportunities to others.
As an aspiring environmental scientist, I believe pursuing a college education is crucial for achieving success in the field and making a positive impact. My goal is to obtain a Ph.D. in Biochemistry to contribute globally and play a key role in addressing the crucial issues related to climate change and environmental degradation. Given the unprecedented challenges our planet is currently facing, I am particularly interested in exploring the impact of these issues on nature and sustainable living. I have had the opportunity to witness the effects of climate change firsthand during my independent studies and travels, from observing unusual events like tornadoes and flooding in London to seeing corn stalks in Zimbabwe burnt brown due to changing climate patterns during harvesting season.
I am constantly on a knowledge acquisition mission. A college education will allow me to sharpen my critical thinking skills, expand my network, consider new perspectives, and positively influence change in a constructive and meaningful way. Whether advocating for sound, sustainable policies or spearheading grassroots environmental awareness campaigns, I know a college education must be a key player on my chessboard. In addition, a college education will undoubtedly contribute to the success of Catalyst2Change.org., a community-focused organization I co-created with my brother, to expand our community involvement and provide opportunities to expose youth to environmental challenges.
Beyond academics, a college education facilitates international awareness and multicultural connections. As a culture champion, I cherish opportunities to be surrounded by peers from various communities. This is modeled by the numerous diversity projects I've had the privilege to produce. One notable endeavor is the creation of "Dear Legacy," a coloring book I created to champion representation and challenge stereotypes in the portrayal of African Americans within specific professions. These initiatives share a straightforward yet profound goal: to convey to my generation that collaboration, diversity, and a college education are the catalysts for breaking down barriers and unlocking our collective potential and greatness.
The book knowledge, critical thinking skills, and connections I will make in college will help to transform myself and those around me. Emotions arise within me, knowing a college education honors my ancestors and will empower me to make a lasting impact on the world.
