My advice to high school freshmen by Shaly - November 2014 Scholarship Essay

My advice to any student entering high school would be to make the most out of your experience but take it seriously. My freshman year I was told that the next four years would rush by and you'll only regret the chances you didn't take. This advice seemed so useless at the time but came time for graduation, I realized just how true it is. You should talk all the positive chances you can while in high school because these opportunities will never come back or be the same. Even if you lose the big homecoming game or prom is less than exciting, the memories will stay with you. You won't remember how hard it rained and how miserable you were when your makeup smeared. You will always remember sitting on the bleachers with your best friend and cheering your heart out for your team.

High school is a place to earn credits but it is a place where you can learn about life and make lasting memories. I couldn't tell you what the score of my freshman year homecoming game was. I couldn't tell you what the name of my senior year counselor was. I could tell you though: how exciting my junior prom was, how much fun dressing up for homecoming games was, how volunteering with classmates helped be appreciate the things I have and how being a member of National Honor Society actually prepared me for some real world experiences. Though high school is the place to earn credits and prepare for college, it is also a place to make life long friends and memories that will remain with you forever.
