Psychological Dreams, Written Up by Shabana - February 2013 Scholarship Essay

My intended college major is psychology, with an English minor. My mom is also going to school for psychology and she was the first one that really got me into the idea. I want to be a therapist, most likely with marriage, relationships and family. I have always been a great listener and look forward to helping those that need someone just to talk to, someone to help them to improve their quality of life, and hopefully to gain better, healthier relationships. There are so many things you can do with a psychology major, and the thought has crossed my mind to study forensic psychology, and who knows? That may be where my college journey takes me. All my psychology classes, even the one I had in high school, I have done well in and thoroughly enjoyed.
At first coming into college I didn’t know I wanted to minor in English. But, after my first college English class started, my academic advisor strongly encouraged me to do so. Writing is something that I enjoy, and can also come in handy in almost any profession. At first I was like “No, I just want to be a psych major” but eventually the thought grew on me. I went to a seminar held by the English department here at St. Thomas, and they showed me how easy it would be to minor in it, and also how useful such a thing could be.
Though I don’t know what I will eventually be doing as a full time career, I know that both my major and my minor are things that I really enjoy doing and studying. My classes so far in both fields have been great, and I look forward to taking more. My hope is that with my dedication and enjoyment of the fields, I will go far, eventually to get my doctorate in psychology and hopefully help a lot of people throughout.
