My Future Goals by Selindina - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I plan on majoring in biochemistry at Penn State. I’ve always had a love for science, and you can thank my middle school science teachers for that. As much as I loved doing the hands-on experience, nothing inspired me more than watching Mythbusters and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Seeing them test the limits of what's possible made me realize that I wanted to do something just as meaningful as they were. Receiving a degree in biochemistry is just the beginning of what I want to do in the future. I plan on becoming a doctor once I receive my undergraduate degree. My passion for the medical field started when I was six years old, watching Doc McStuffins on Disney Channel. Seeing her help her friends and stuffed animals inspired me. At that moment I realized I wanted to become a doctor, and I had my mom buy me a lab coat so I could look like her. As I grew up, I developed a condition called Graves disease and had to be taken in for surgery. Throughout the whole process, my doctors and nurses made me feel safe and gave me the utmost confidence that everything would turn out fine. I love learning about the world, and pursuing a career in medicine would allow me to make a difference.
