English, the class that inspired me by Scarlett - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

This is a hard question for me to answer, but my favorite class, which has always been closely tied with math, is English. I've grown to love the atmosphere of it. Before I'd always been a pretty quiet kid, especially in class. I tended to not want to draw too much attention to myself, but due to my English classes that has changed. I love the open discussions of the reading or simply just the lesson because I feel like my English teachers actually do want me to engage and sometimes it feels like a conversation instead of a lecture, I love it when I come up with a new thesis statement or idea I find really insightful and I am able to share it with the class. I love how the English teachers listen to our partner discussions and inquire further about the points we were making. Due to English I've learned not just to enjoy reading, which I already did, but to ask questions about it or notice random diction or slang in a book. I love the books we read for class, most people read the SparkNotes or sometimes don't even bother reading anything at all, but I always love to read the books because they never seem to be just black and white. Like in the book we just recently read over the summer, Wuthering Heights, and how there seems to be no hero and yet all the people that are supposed to be the villains aren't all bad, and how there's depth to each of them. I also love writing and trying to make an argument for my essays, I love how my English teachers leave commentary on my work and correct me or congratulate me. My love of English inspired me to ask my grandparents, both former teachers, for a list of 100 books to read before I graduate. English is the class I look forward to, and taught me my love of reading and writing which has inspired me to do it every day, this is why English is my favorite class.
