Growth in College by Saviana - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
The choice to go to college is something everyone has to make for themselves. It can be something expected of some that does not always fit or something never even imagined for others but seems to be the perfect fit. Whatever someone’s reason is to go on this journey for higher education, there seems to always be one main reason that outweighs the rest. For me, that reason, and my word of choice, is growth. College is going to be a very different experience for me and it can be something that will open my eyes to many new things in all different aspects of my life. College will let me grow through new education and schooling experiences. I have taken AP and honors courses at my high school which are supposedly based off of college classes and can prepare you for college, but they were not really the same. I know that the actual college courses I take will be far more rigorous and challenging but worth it to lead to the life I hope to achieve. For one thing, the college classes will be much larger and more diverse with people who truly want to learn about the subject and are not forced to be there because of the public school is forcing them to be there. Having others around me who share the same interests as me will better prepare me for the future. We will all be able to help each other grow around the subject and determine what the best course will be after college. This social growth will help my education and personality. As a high schooler right now, I am somewhat introverted and not very willingly to try new things all the time, even if I know they would probably be good for me. College will help me settle that fear because it will force me to meet new people and make new relationships if I want to have an enjoyable experience as a young adult getting higher education.
Along with all of this growth from being more socially open and getting better education, I will grow to be more involved in the world around me. As I am taking government classes in high school and making new bonds with my teachers, I am discovering my interest in politics and forming my own opinions on many issues. I am able to have more intellectual conversations with my friends and acquaintances and know that it will only increase once in college. I will be able to find a more diverse range of people with all types of views that may or may not agree with mine, but each person I come across will teach me something new. Having a more open view of the world that I am a part of can help me narrow down exactly what I want to do after graduation. The strides and growth I hope on making in college will fill in my outline of life and shift it in the best direction for success.
