Build a Home, Not a House by Savea - April 2023 Scholarship Essay
If I had unlimited time and money, without a doubt, I would design houses. I think there's beauty, and art in designing houses, there needs to be personality to a home. In our current time, homes are being stripped of personality. I want to bring it back. With unlimited time, I would design and place every single person in a home that matches their personality.
Have you driven around a fancy neighborhood, gawking at all the beautiful homes? I drove around the fancy neighborhoods, marveling at the gorgeous houses. I saw them from the outside, but man was I always thinking about the insides too. Were there hardwood floors, and cathedral ceilings, I think about the balance of French Country to Contemporary styles.
I’ve gained the skill to do so through my time in school. Not only that, I learned there are over 500,000 unhoused people, and an even larger struggling to stay in shelters, and not enough people doing something about it. But in efforts to create more “affordable” housing, these “homes” are being robbed of personality. My schooling has not only taught me artistic skills and social knowledge, it also taught me compassion.
I fully plan to do this even with the limited time and money. I think affordable housing, the lack thereof, enormous issue that our society is facing right now. With an unlimited supply of money and time, I could achieve this goal on an even grander scale.
