New Year, New Student by Savannah - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

All over the country, people are making New Year’s resolutions that they believe will benefit their life. Among these hopefuls are students who hope for a better year. These students may make a goal to lose weight or to “be a better person”, although these goals are realistic, they will not help that individual grow as a student. Unlike most, my New Year’s resolution will help me in my current academic situation as well as my future academic career. I plan to better myself this New Year by improving my study skills and habits. A reflection of the strengthening of these skills will show in my grades, my stress level, and my time management.
Once I acquire the necessary habits of productive studying, my grades will improve. Correct studying skills will not only allow me to know how to do a problem or just know the answer, I will be able to know why that is the answer. If I can understand the background behind a question and comprehend the mechanics involved, I can understand the problem and the class on a deeper level. Having this deeper knowledge will allow me to make a more educated guess on problems I do not fully comprehend yet. Having these study skills will raise my grade and help me to become a better student.
Having appropriate study skills for the 2016 semester will take a load of stress off of my shoulders. In the beginning I may be stressed about not comprehending the material, but in the end when my grades raise due to good studying, my stress level will ultimately decrease. I will not have to worry about raising my grades or what percentage I need to get on a test to dig my grade out of the hole. By studying correctly, I will receive better grades. As a result of better grades, I will ultimately be less stressed, making me a better student.
I have learned throughout my life that it is easier for me to time manage when I have more things to do. The less tasks on my list, the more time I have to sit around, then I will not have the motivation to go on to a new task. Good studying takes up more time than quick studying or not studying at all. If I add another task to my list, I will give myself the opportunity to manage my time better. Between school, sports, and studying I will not have any time to be distracted by the television or my phone. A good student always has good time management skills.
Everybody’s New Year’s resolution is set because they feel like they need a change in their life. Some people’s change is weight loss or a change in their personality; my New Year’s resolution is to be a better student in 2016. To do this, I need to change my study habits and learn better studying skills. This resolution will result in better grades, lower stress levels, and better time management skills. All of these qualities will help me to become the new student I wish to be this New Year.
