Paging Dr. Schneider by Savannah - February 2019 Scholarship Essay

“Beep. Beep. Beep.” “Wahhhhhh.” “Click clack, click clack.” Running through a hallway, hearing and attending to chaotic noises may be extremely overwhelming for some people. However, for me, I love the idea of becoming a Pediatrician. The atmosphere is crazy and hectic, which makes it easy for my bubbly and sparkly personality to thrive. I enjoy and love the thought of meeting new friends and creating new relationships with others. A few years ago, I began working in a church nursery, taking care of infants and children by changing them, feeding, and interacting with them while their parents are gone. The simple fact of tickling and chasing toddlers around and hearing sweet and innocent giggles warms my heart because they are so happy and content in that moment. By this point, I assume you are probably thinking, “Why don’t you just become an elementary teacher, or even a day care provider?”. Well, I have considered both of those occupations, but there seemed to be an imperfection, a missing piece in my future equation. At the age of seven, I preferred to be a pretty princess who lived in a large castle. Fortunately, I was intelligent enough to realize it was not a realistic future for myself in the society in which we live. When it was to my turn answer, I unenthusiastically replied with a doctor. Through my journey of secondary education, medicine and the body began to fascinate me in a great many ways. Some people often find human biology, more specifically tissues and organ systems, extremely boring. However, even the most simplest forms of anatomy interest me. During my human biology class, we learned about the appearance, functions and locations of connective, muscle, and epithelial tissues. I found it remarkable how tissues and cells can be so small yet so vital for the daily function of our bodies. In the end, it would only be smart to take my two great passions and put them together to create my perfect career. Luckily, after realizing what I enjoy, I can focus on helping people grow and become healthy again. Using my knowledge and skills to help a child get over the flu, perform a physical, identify the unknown virus making them sick, or give a quick check up to make sure everything is healthy and working correctly is what interests me most, because sometimes what you think is simple, turns out to be more complicated than you could have ever imagined. The factor that separates a pediatrician from a daycare provider is the ability to help in a way that many people are not trained or fully knowledgeable. To find the missing piece, I added medicine to the equation to complete the perfect puzzle that encompasses my purpose, enjoyment, and desires. Working as a pediatrician could be stressful and crazy. When you think how you are keeping the next generations healthy, alive, and ready to take on the world, it makes the ride worth all the chaos.
