Yearbook by Savannah - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

In my junior year, I decided to try and tackle another AP class-AP Bio. It turned out to be too much of a challenge during my busy eleventh grade year so I dropped it and decided to take yearbook. Despite how this may appear-that I am a lazy student who wasn’t up for the challenge-I am actually very glad I made this decision.
Yearbook had always intrigued me, but I had never been willing to sign up for it. It just hovered in the back of my mind. Once I joined the class, I met my wonderful teacher, Mrs. Matthews. She was a snarky and sassy character, but being in her class instantly brightened my day. When we weren't working hard on our pages, we would sit and reminisce with her. She had taught at Aquinas when my uncles attended the school and she would tell us funny stories about past students.
Besides spending the year with Mrs. Matthews, I met one of my best friends. I had gone to school with her since kindergarten, but we had never grown close. Sitting side by side with Amanda everyday instantly changed that. We started talking more and hanging out outside of school. Now I can't imagine life without her.
While it may seem as if I gave up on the challenge of an AP class, I see it more as each decision we make in life has an effect. If I never would have taken yearbook, I would not have shared those experiences. I would never have grown close to Mrs. Matthews or my best friend, Amanda. My life would be completely different, although I wouldn’t know it. Taking yearbook has impacted my life because it showed me the value of people. People can be around for years and you never notice how important they are. Before you know it, they can take center stage in your life. Never take the people surrounding you for granted-they may mean the world to you someday.
