Teaching Math by Savannah - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

In school, us students sometimes have a hard time comprehending certain subjects while our other peers can understand it perfectly. For me personally, I struggle with comprehending history and I haven't had the best history teachers to help me understand it better. If the roles were reversed I would want to teach math so that I could, be a better teacher than most teachers today and show them that its not as easy as they make it seem, because math in my opinion needs the most comprehension to grasp.
At all my schools I have attended, there are some teachers who "didn't teach" and just show powerpoint slides and expect students to learn the material. As a teacher it is your job to ensure that your students perform well in the class, on homework, and especially on tests. As a math teacher, I would ensure my students understand the material before I handed out the test. Math includes hard word problems, confusing steps in solving problems, and long formulas that take forever to remember. To guarantee that everyone learned the material I would make the class interesting and make fun math activities and show fun math videos to get all of the material across in a education yet fun way. I feel that since I good at math and a fun person, I would excel in teaching math.
Teachers not only don't teach, but they expect you to know the material quickly and at a fast pace. I believe students should only learn new material at a pace they are comfortable learning at rather than learning too quick to where they don't understand. Math is a prime example because of all the different sections and units that are totally different from each other.. As a teacher I would make sure that the pace for my teaching is perfect for all my students and I would sow down or speed up if necessary. Teachers need to understand that students don't all have the same thinking process and can't understand hard subjects like math all at the same pace as other students.
All in all, I would teach math as a subject because math is such a hard concept to pick up I feel that I would get my lessons across in an understandable and fun way to relate to the students and to show teachers that all students are not the same and learn things at different paces.
