My Academic Story by Sasha - May 2022 Scholarship Essay
My name is Sasha. I'm sixteen and reside in Alabama. I had cancer when I was eighteen months old. It had lasted for a year. After treatment, my learning abilities suffered. I did not speak much. I went to speech class in grades 1-2 to improve my English.
Towards the end of my second-grade years, my speech classes ended. My teacher recommended me a tutor. From there, I was learning outside of school to improve my English and Math. I struggled a lot. I made C's, D's, and some B's.
My elementary years were arduous. As it turns out, my diligence paid off. The summer before sixth grade, my tutor said I was ready to do school myself without her help. I was nervous and was not sure if I wanted to stop learning from her. At the end of my sixth-grade year, I received an A Honor Roll Award.
Through this childhood experience, I attained skills such as diligence, perseverance, and determination. I use these skills to accomplish my school work and prepare for college. For instance, I took a college course last semester and succeeded. It took a lot of effort, time, and determination. In the end, the hard work was worth it.
